Recognition of Seth Fenderson for his third-place finish for the Astronomical League’s Horkheimer/O’Meara Journalism Award

Background:
Seth Fenderson is a ten year old, 5th grader from Legacy Christian Academy who received third place for the 2020 Horkheimer/O’Meara Journalism Award from the Astronomical League. Seth was awarded $250.00 for his essay entitled, ‘Mars 2020 Rover’.
The Astronomical League is a 75-year-old organization that has a membership of 19,000 amateur and professional astronomers. The League’s mission is: To promote the science of astronomy; To encourage and coordinate activities of amateur astronomical societies; To foster observational and computational work, and craftsmanship in the various fields of astronomy; To provide a medium for correlating amateur activities with professional research. The League offers many special awards not just for service and outreach, but contributions to the science of astronomy.
Peggy Walker, Astronomical League Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) coordinator brought Seth to the attention of Councilor Debra Wimpee. After working with Seth one-on-one, Ms. Walker recognized his exceptional aptitude and love for astronomy. Seth is active in astronomy with his father setting up and using Meade telescopes. He is a member of the Astronomy Club of Tulsa.
City Council and staff would like to recognize Seth’s important achievement.
