Background:

In the United States, there are approximately 19,400 municipalities of varying sizes. In each community, whatever its size, there are needs common to all human beings that must be met through the provision of public works services.  These needs are met on a daily basis by visionary, values-driven, and hardworking men and women who provide and sustain public works services in the best interests of their communities.

The American Public Works Association (APWA), along with its 30,000 members, will celebrate the week of May 19-25, 2019 as National Public Works Week.  This week, celebrated annually, honors the thousands of men and women who are first responders and who provide services to communities to enhance the quality of life. This year’s theme is “It Starts Here”This theme represents the many facets of modern civilization that grow out of the efforts put forth by the public works professionals across North America.

What starts here? Infrastructure starts with public works... Growth and innovation starts with public works... Mobility starts with public works... Security starts with public works... Healthy communities start with public works... The end result is that citizens' quality of life starts with public works.
