Background:

The Youth City Council (YCC) met regularly during the school year under the direction of City Council Members Johnnie Parks and Scott Eudey, along with members of the City Manager’s staff.  The purpose of YCC is to introduce its members to municipal government. During the year, the YCC had the opportunity to hear presentations from various departments including: Police, General Services, Human Resources, City Clerk, Utilities, and Streets & Stormwater. They also had the opportunity to tour the History Museum and Verdigris River Water Treatment Plant, as well as job shadow various staff members in areas of interest to them.

Five senior members of the YCC traveled to Washington, D.C. in March with City Councilors and staff to attend the National League of Cities (NLC) 2019 Congressional City Conference. While in Washington, they participated in conference programs, visited national monuments, experienced public transportation, and took part in activities with other Youth Councils from across the country. YCC members raised funds to help pay for their own travel expenses.

The following senior Youth City Council Members have fulfilled the requirements of the Youth Council program for their two-year term and will be recognized following the NLC Conference presentation:

Shewetanshu Das, Booker T. Washington

Brianna Hays, BAHS

Nathan Hubbard, BAHS

My Vu Le, BAHS

Madison Sipes, Lincoln Christian

Kelsie Schwab, BAHS

The Broken Arrow Youth City Council is currently a two-year program open to high school students living in the Broken Arrow fenceline. Starting in the fall of 2019, it will be a three-year program. More information and applications are available at www.brokenarrowok.gov/youthcitycouncil.
