Presentation of the Together Project Artwork Competition and Recognition of the Award Winners

Background:
As a part of The Together Project, a partnership between the City of Broken Arrow and the Broken Arrow Public Schools, the two (2) entities collectively collaborated to establish a "Keep Broken Arrow Clean: Don't Litter" program. The aim of the program is to keep our waterways clean of litter and debris in order to assist in improving our overall water quality. One of the first steps in establishing this program was to hold an Art Competition among the school students to create a mascot and catch phrase so we could promote this idea among our citizens.

In October of 2018, the School posted notices within the high school calling for all artists to create artwork that conveys the concept defined above. Several high school students entered the competition and submitted their art work. A selection committee consisting of both School and City officials reviewed all the submissions. Several pieces caught the panel's eyes and created a great deal of discussion; however, without question, two (2) pieces rose to the top.

One piece represented exactly what the competition embodied. Ms. Paige Arnold created Phil the Raccoon as a mascot who encourages the public to "Stash the Trash (Please Don't Litter)." The committee easily selected Ms. Arnold's creative work to represent our program. Ms. Arnold and her parents have generously donated her personal, creative work to the joint organizations for our use.

Likewise, a second piece caught the committee's eyes because it depicts the overall message that the Together Project desires to proclaim to the public. Simply stated, "Our actions have consequence regarding our environment." Ms. Kimberly Vang created a piece that the committee saw as a representation of our message.
