Background:

The Broken Arrow Fire Department was awarded a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 6, under the fiscal year 2017 Emergency Management Performance Grant Program.  The grant will allow the Broken Arrow Fire Department to purchase an inflatable motorized rescue boat equipped with a jet-drive propulsion system.

Currently the Broken Arrow Fire Department has ninety-four personnel with swift water training certification.  Fifty-four of these personnel are technician level while the remaining forty personnel are operational level certification.  Three of these personnel are zodiac boat operator certified.  The Broken Arrow Fire Department has approximately one hundred and five square miles within its fence line with seventy-five of those square miles adversely affected during heavy rainfall events.

An inflatable motorized boat, equipped with a jet-drive propulsion system, is a commonly utilized rescue boat for flash flood and swift water situations.  The jet-drive propulsion system allows the rescuers to operate in shallow water conditions, alleviate propeller entanglement issues, and avoid possible propeller injuries during both training and rescue operations.

The grant does not require any matching funds.  However, should the cost of the inflatable motorized boat exceed the grant award of $25,263.98, the City of Broken Arrow will cover any additional expenses not expected to exceed $6,000.

Cost:                                                                Not to exceed $6,000

Funding Source:                     Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 6 Grant
Fire Sales Tax Fund 45 - not to exceed $6,000
