Background:
VJ Day, otherwise known as Victory over Japan Day and Victory in the Pacific Day, is a day that commemorates Japan's surrender during World War II, and thereby bringing an end to the war. On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the atomic bomb "Little Boy" on Hiroshima, Japan, and on August 9, dropped the atomic bomb "Fat Man" on Nagasaki, Japan, acts that resulted in the Japanese formally surrendering to the Allies on August 15, 1945, a date ending World War II, and followed when that condition was made official on September 2, 1945, with the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. In the announcement of final victory for the armed forces of the United States and its Allied nations, defending the cause of liberty, justice, and freedom, the most terrible and devastating war known to man and history came to an end. Celebration of this anniversary of the historic VJ Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the past and renew our patriotism so that we may continue to live in freedom and seek peace so that our veterans will not have died in vain. This world-inspiring and most significant event is occasion for appropriate celebration for rejoicing, for tribute, and thanksgiving. In view of the City having created a Veterans Park where patriotic and other events may be conducted, the occasion is recognized as an event endorsed by the City of Broken Arrow.
This Proclamation proclaims Saturday, August 11, 2018, as the 73rd Anniversary Celebration of VJ Day in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
