Consideration, discussion, and possible approval of and authorization to execute a Proclamation declaring August 7, 2018, as Purple Heart Day in the City of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
End
Background:
On August 1, 2017, the City Council approved a Proclamation declaring the City of Broken Arrow as a Purple Heart City in recognition of the service and sacrifice of the men and women of Broken Arrow who have served our country.
The original Purple Heart was known as the Badge of Military Merit. It was established by George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army by order from his Newburgh, New York headquarters on August 7, 1782. General George Washington awarded the Badge of Military Merit to three Revolutionary War soldiers, and authorized his subordinate officers to issue Badges of Merit as appropriate. From then on, as its legend grew, so did its appearance. Although never abolished, the award of the badge was not proposed again officially until after World War I.
The American Legion is requesting that the City Council issue a proclamation declaring August 7, 2018 as Purple Heart Remembrance Day in the City of Broken Arrow. Staff recommends that the proclamation be approved.
