Presentation, discussion, and possible acceptance of the 2018 Broken Arrow Youth City Council's "Big Idea" - Educating local children on healthy living and prevention of childhood obesity through healthy choices and lifestyles

Background:
As part of the Youth City Council (YCC) experience, students were asked to research and select an idea to present to City Council that would benefit the City of Broken Arrow. This year the YCC partnered with the Parks and Recreation Department to work on a joint program idea - preventing and reducing childhood obesity in our community. The main objective is teaching children about this topic during a summer camp. We want children to know how to live healthier lifestyles and bring awareness to healthy living in Broken Arrow.
The Youth City Council is asking for support from the City Council members and City administration to carry out this Childhood Obesity Prevention initiative through a summer camp located at Central Park Community Center. Funding for such program has already been allocated through the General Operations Budget of the Recreation Division. The Youth City Council is asking for your support now and going forward to help grow the program in future years.
To do this, staff members plan to conduct participant surveys to collect data such as general knowledge on nutrition, exercise, and health. Collecting this information in the first year will help staff understand programming and staffing needs in order to expand the program in future years, with the availability of potential grant funding.
