Consideration, discussion, and possible approval of the relocation of the Vietnam War Memorial in Central Park to Veterans’ Park

End

Background:

The Vietnam War Memorial is currently located in Central Park, located north of the community center parking lot and south of the creek through Central Park.    The Vietnam War Memorial was placed in Central Park prior to the master planning and expansion of Veterans’ Park.

The existing memorial includes an inscribed granite stone with the names of those from Broken Arrow who gave their lives in Vietnam, at the base of the stone is inscribed “Erected by Broken Arrow Round Up Club”, insignias of the armed services branches are inscribed into a granite laminate and including “Dedicated to all our Veterans their memories will never die”, small contributor plaques are placed at the base wall of the memorial, along with three flag poles, and plantings.

The proposal is to relocate the memorial to Veterans’ Park, which is located on the eastside of Main Street and across the street from Central Park.  A master plan for Veterans’ Park was created by the R.L. Shears Company, a professional Landscape Architect, and the master plan was approved by the City Council.  Since the creation of the Veterans’ Park master plan, the Women’s’ War memorial, an ornamental fountain, the “American Patriot” statue, walkways, flagpoles, and landscaping have been installed.  The “Colonel Earnest Childers” statue was in place prior to the master plan but was incorporated into the master plan design.

The relocation of the Vietnam War Memorial would start the phase II implementation of the Veterans’ Park master plan, which will include a new walkway leading from Main Street to the relocated Vietnam War Memorial and terminating at the “American Patriot” statue.

Funding is not currently available for the relocation, but would be considered in the fiscal year 2018 capital budget plan, subject to the City Council’s approval.
