Title:
title
Approval of and authorization to execute all necessary documents for a contract with Symetra Life Insurance Company to provide basic life, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D), and long-term disability (LTD) insurance to eligible city employees to be effective January 1, 2027
End

Background:
As part of the employee benefit program, the City of Broken Arrow provides basic life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefits to all fulltime employees, except those covered by an agreement with the International Association of Firefighters. (The IAFF provides insurance benefits to its members).
The City currently pays the full cost of the basic life insurance benefit, which is one-times the employee's annual salary, up to $150,000, and a special provision for the City Manager for a benefit up to $350,000. In addition, the City also provides long-term disability in the event an eligible employee is unable to perform their job.
Our Insurance Broker went to market for life insurance and long-term disability and reviewed the current rates being provided by MetLife. As a result of potential premium savings, the insurance advisory committee and staff (the parties) reviewed various proposals for basic life & AD&D and long-term disability. To ensure we provide the most cost-effective benefits for the employees, the Insurance Advisory Committee and staff are recommending a new contract with Symetra to provide basic life and AD&D, and long-term disability, to be effective January 1, 2027. These policies have no effect on the employee as the employees do not need to utilize these benefits unless there is a catastrophic event.
