Approval of and authorization to amend bid number 26.160 awarded to Central Salt to meet the potential demand for road salt this winter season

Background:
The City solicited quotes from a total of (3) vendors of which only one submitted a quote. The purchase of road salt from Central Salt exceeded the original bid price due to addition of chemicals to the salt mixture. The original bid price was $74.77 per ton; however, the final cost increased to $99.77 per ton after the additives were incorporated to enhance the product’s performance during extreme weather conditions. The decision to use the upgraded mixture was based on operational needs and the goal of providing a more effective treatment for roadways.
As a result, the increased cost ($99.77 per ton) reflects the added materials necessary to meet performance requirements and ensure the road salt met the City’s winter maintenance standards.
Please note that this enhanced salt mixture will be reserved for use only during extreme winter weather conditions when additional ice melting performance is necessary. During normal winter weather events and the routine cold weather conditions, we will continue to use the standard salt product.
