Background:
The General Obligation Bond initiative that will go to the voters is tentatively scheduled for April 2026 and will include approximately $400 million dollars in proposed capital improvement projects for Transportation, Public Safety, Parks and Recreation, Public Facilities, Stormwater, Drainage, and the South Broken Arrow Library. If approved by voters, the Bond initiative will not raise property taxes.
More than $1 billion dollars in improvements were presented for consideration of inclusion in the 2026 GO Bond. That total has been trimmed down to approximately $600 million dollars in projects that are still being considered for the seven (7) anticipated propositions of the bond initiative. Another $200 million dollars in projects must be pared down to meet the City Council's directive of the 2026 GO Bond representing no increase in the property tax rate.
Despite the eventual cut of more projects from the 2026 GO Bond, the need for improvements is not removed. The potential 8th proposition explores the idea of including approximately $52 million dollars of improvements to Broken Arrow sports facilities where youth and adult organizations participate in athletic programs like soccer, fast-pitch softball, baseball, football, and lacrosse. It would also include general infrastructure improvements to the internal roadway, parking lots, and lighting at Indian Springs Sports Complex. Broken Arrow is being passed over by other cities as an option to host tournaments for our youth sports organizations. Local tournaments here are advantageous to Broken Arrow families due to the financial commitment required of traveling to tournaments elsewhere.
