Presentation and update on the City of Broken Arrow and Wagoner County Metropolitan Area Planning Commission Exploratory Committee
End
Background:
The City of Broken Arrow Comprehensive Plan Action Land Use 3.2 states that the city should explore mechanisms to ensure adequate development standards in unincorporated areas of the city’s fenceline. One mechanism is a Regional or Metropolitan Area Planning Commission. Allowable by state law, these types of commissions would help ensure that development that occurs in nearby unincorporated areas of Wagoner County is closer to the standards required in Broken Arrow city limits. Additional benefits to the City and County are joint development standards, smooth transitions on possible annexation, joint development of projects, and shared costs of plans and developments. The Commission would entail regular coordination discussions with neighboring municipalities and governing bodies to share and maximize utility and infrastructure efficiencies.
On October 4, 2022, City Council approved the creation of the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission Exploratory Committee made up of the following representatives that were subsequently appointed:
• One (1) City Council Member - Councilor Johnny Parks
• One (1) Board of County Commissioner Member - Commissioner James Hanning
• Two (2) City Citizens - Joshua Stenros, Johnny Walker
• Two (2) County Citizens - Ben Maier, Joe Robson
• One (1) City Official to be appointed by the City Manager - Kenneth Schwab
• Two (1) County Official to be appointed by the County Commissioner - Rachael Cooper
The presentation will be an update and report on the Exploratory Committee’s activities and the feasibility and next steps.
