Presentation and discussion of upcoming micro-survey about the South Broken Arrow Library
End
Background:
The Tulsa City County Library (TCCL) system has 24 libraries in its organization, including two in Broken Arrow, one near downtown and the other in south BA. The South Broken Arrow Library, located at 3600 S. Chestnut Avenue, is 6,000 square feet and was built in 1993 and renovated in 2007. However, it has not been expanded to keep pace with the growth in the community or the foot traffic coming through its doors.
Despite its current size, the South Broken Arrow Library has the fifth highest circulation of items out of the 24 TCCL libraries. Nearly 150,000 items are used in the South Broken Arrow Library annually with more than half, 79,653, being children's items. More than 21 homeschooling groups also use the library's community meeting room for various education activities for students.
Foot traffic at the South Broken Arrow Library has increased every year since 2021, and it is expected to increase its number of visitors by 67 percent through 2026.
TCCL has a plan to construct a much-needed new library in the empty lot to the east of the current location. The new building is being designed to be twice as large as the original with an estimated cost of $12,000,000.00. Features of the new building include a drive-up service window, outdoor spaces, large community meeting rooms, homeschool classrooms, tech hub, and much more.
TCCL has raised $655,000.00 in private funding toward the project as part of a fundraising campaign and put forth another $7,000,000.00 from its funds to help pay for the new building.
City staff have produced a micro-survey to poll citizens about the city potentially partnering with TCCL to contribute financially to the library's plan to construct the new building.
