Background:
The City Manager has initiated the need for the establishment of Monarch Butterfly habitats in the city of Broken Arrow. This action is needed because of the decline of the Monarch Butterfly due to the degradation and loss of summer breeding habitat in the U.S. Oklahoma is a key corridor for the Monarch Butterfly migration pattern from the U.S. to Mexico and the return trip. The establishment of Monarch waystation habitats is a national effort being led by the National Wildlife Federation, MonarchWatch.org, state and local agencies, schools, and citizens.
The Parks and Recreation Department has been assigned to facilitate the Monarch program in the City of Broken Arrow with Brad West, Grounds Supervisor, being the project coordinator. A citizen action committee has been established for the purpose of assisting the City with the implementation of the Monarch habitat program. This has included research, identification of Monarch waystations sites, education, marketing, and the continued support of development of the program. The committee has identified six initial public locations to seed and plant, which will take place this Fall and Spring, they include: Broadway and Elm Gateway, City Hall, Jackson Park, Ray Harral Nature Park, Veterans Park, Battle Creek Golf Course, and Broken Arrow High School. One goal is to add public sites annually and to have Monarch habitats established by private groups, citizens, and businesses. Additional information about the program is provided by the City of Broken Arrow Monarch Project Proposal, which is attached.
The next step in the Monarch Project Proposal is for the Mayor to sign the Mayor’s Pledge as developed by the National Wildlife Federation, which demonstrates support of the Monarch Butterfly reestablishment program in the City of Broken Arrow.
