Background:
The Broken Arrow Police Department consistently utilizes digital evidence as an invaluable tool in the investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses. A digital storage/analysis laboratory was created from various funding sources over previous years that has allowed investigators to accomplish this goal. However, best practices are limited with regards to product enhancements, storage options, and data security challenges. Due to the increased use of technology by offenders as well as the vast and sensitive nature of the applicable data, the department is in significant need of a digital storage infrastructure upgrade and expansion.
Upon review of the requirements and further recognition of the need to consolidate all digital evidence, the IT Department reviewed three options. The goal was to identify an enterprise, low-cost solution that can grow as needed with an option to offset data in an effort to lower the cost of archival storage. Proposals were received from Dell, Pure, and Spectra Logic. Due to cost, functionality, and software that can automate archival data, Spectra Logic BlackPearl NAS was selected as the recommended solution.
