Meeting of: August 18, 2026

Title:

title

Approval of and authorization to execute all necessary documents for a contract with Symetra to provide voluntary life, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D), and short-term disability insurance to City employees effective January 1, 2027

End

Background:

As part of the employee benefit program, the City of Broken Arrow provides basic term life and accidental death and dismemberment benefits to all fulltime employees, except those covered by an agreement with the International Association of Firefighters. (The IAFF provides insurance benefits to its members).  The City currently pays the full cost of the basic life insurance benefit, which is one times the employee’s annual salary, up to $150,000.  In addition, the City also provides long-term disability in the event an eligible employee is unable to perform their job.

As a voluntary option, eligible employees are provided an opportunity to purchase supplemental life insurance for themselves, their spouse and/or child(ren), if they so elect the additional coverage.  The voluntary life benefit is currently provided through MetLife; however, due to potential premium savings, the city’s insurance broker went out to market to review rates on supplemental life and short-term disability options.

The Insurance Advisory Committee and staff are recommending a new contract with Symetra to provide voluntary life & AD&D, and short-term disability to employees effective January 1, 2027.
