Background:

 

The City of Broken Arrow adopted the Downtown Master Plan in 2005.  Since that time the City has played an active role in the development of the Rose District, the establishment of the Main Street Arts and Entertainment areas and completed a number of public improvement projects. All of these actions have resulted in a tremendous amount of private investment in commercial, retail and mixed use development on and near Main Street.

As we near the completion of the streetscape redevelopment initiative, the City will now focus its attention on

residential development in the areas surrounding the Main Street core. The City will lead a community process to update the zoning ordinance in the Rose District. Major project objectives include:

                     Engage the community to determine the appropriateness of various residential building types;

                     Create a strong and unique sense of community;

                     Increase project feasibility by removing development barriers in the current zoning code;

                     Ensure compatibility with the Rose District’s established residential districts; and

                     Create easy-to-use prescriptive design standards.

This new initiative will focus on a one-square mile area of downtown, bounded by Kenosha Street (north), Houston Street (south), 9th Street (east) and Elm Place (west). To help guide us through the process, the City has retained a planning consulting firm, ADG, to assist in the community process and development of the updated design standards.

 

The Consulting team will be in town to make this presentation to the Downtown Advisory Board (DAB), on Tuesday December 13, during the regular scheduled meeting. A Public Workshop, which is open to the public, will also be conducted by the Consulting team and Staff on Wednesday December 14, from 6pm to 8pm, at Central on Main.
